Tectonic geomorphology and the record of Quaternary plate boundary deformation in the Olympic Mountains

چکیده
We use Quaternary stratigraphy to reconstruct landscape evolution and measure tectonic deformation of the Olympic Mountains section of the Pacifi c Northwest Coast Range. An important motivation for understanding orogenesis here, and throughout the Coast Range, is the concern about the relationship of active deformation to seismic hazards associated with the Cascadia subduction zone. There is also much interest in apportioning the nature of the deformation, whether cyclic or permanent, whether it involves mainly shortening parallel or normal to the margin, and how the deformation on the proversus retrowedge sides of the orogen compare. Pre-Holocene stratigraphy and structure provide the only records of suffi cient duration to separate long-term permanent deformation from earthquake-cycle elastic deformation. For this reason, active-tectonic studies have focused on deformation of Quaternary deposits and landforms, which are best preserved along the Pacifi c Coast and offshore on the continental shelf. At least four major glacial advances are recorded in the valley and coastal deposits along the western margin of the Olympic Peninsula. Both numeric and relative dating, including soils of these deposits, establish a stratigraphic anchor that is used to document the relationship between margin parallel and margin normal deformation in 38 F.J. A fluvial record of plate-boundary deformation in the Olympics Mountains
(2) What is driving orogenesis for the Olympic Mountain segment of the Cascadia Subduction Zone? Is it shortening parallel to the direction of plate convergence, shortening normal to the direction of plate convergence, or some combination of both? Are there any geomorphic or stratigraphic field relationships that can actually be used to track the horizontal movement of rocks and thus interpret ...
متن کاملVariation of Lithosphere-Asthenosphere boundary beneath Iran by using S Receiver function
The current geological and tectonic setting of Iran is due to the ongoing convergence between the Arabian and Eurasian Plates, which resulted in the formation of the Iranian plateau, mountain building, extensive deformation and seismicity. The Iranian plateau is characterized by various domains including the continental collision and the oceanic plate seduction. Based on S receiver functions ar...
متن کاملNew seismic imaging of some tectonic zones in the Iranian Plateau
The Iranian Plateau is characterized by diverse tectonic domains, including the continental collisions (e.g. the Zagros and Alborz Mountains) and oceanic plate subduction (e.g. Makransubduction zone). To derive a detailed image of the crust–mantle (Moho) and lithosphere–asthenosphere (LAB) boundaries in some tectonically units of the Iranian Plateau, we used a large number of S receiver functio...
متن کاملRecurrent seismicity in Rajasthan State in the tectonically stable NW Indian Craton
Indian peninsular region comprises several Archean cratonic blocks (Dharwar, Bastar, Singhbhum, Aravalli – Bundelkhand), bordered by Proterozoic mobile belts. Therefore, this region is considered as tectonically stable and designated as the least vulnerable region to earthquake hazard except the still active Central Indian Tectonic Zone (CITZ). The latter is a major suture between southern and ...

The purpose of this study was to identify evidence of late Quaternary glaciers in the northern highlands of Binalood. Topographic maps, satellite imagery and climatic data are the tools and data used in this study. Arc gis 10.4 software was used for data analysis. Quaternary glacier evidences were identified based on four types of evidences including morphic indices, climatic evidences, geomorp...
